During the Hajj season, pilgrims pass one of the night in Muzdalifah, a wide-open area on the Hajj route. Here they collect Jamarat (21 small stones) to throw at the three pillars over the next three days in a ritual of stoning the Devil. After my aunt had finished collecting her stones, she slowly became detached from her surroundings and started to draw patterns in the sand. At that moment, I felt certain that art is an innately human act.
