Melons

1992
Oil on canvas
46.4 x 38.3"(118 x 97.5 cm)

Riding on the bus with my parents during the time of the Hajj pilgrimage, out of the window I noticed a bald-headed man buying Honeydew melons from a street vendor. Many men ritually shave their heads for the pilgrimage. This man was fair-skinned, which made his bald head look so similar to the round fruit, that he appeared to be holding a second head in his hand. When I got home, I couldn’t find a bald man with a skin tone similar to that of the melon, so the outcome is far from what I wished it to be.
